Sewa

Sewa forms an essential part of Sikh life, providing spiritual fulfilment and practical benefits.

Sewa

What is Sewa?

Sewa is very important in the Sikh faith and it means ‘selfless service’ - work or service performed without any thought of reward or personal benefit. In Punjabi, the person performing such service is called a Sewadar

Sikhs are encouraged to perform Sewa and it is defined as being good for the moral uplifting of the person. For Sikhs, sewa forms an essential part of their life, providing spiritual fulfilment and practical benefits.

The importance of selfless sewa is highlighted by the Guru in this verse:

"ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਤ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਹਕਾਮੀ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਹੋਤ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ

Sewa is a very important concept for everyone at Khalsa Primary.  Pupils, parents and staff do sewa as often as they can. As a school we are truly grateful for the sewa regularly provided by so many people.

The London Smagam Sewadars

downloadThe London Smagam sewadars did much sewa so that our school Smagam was a great success. They did a lot of work in the background – reading paath, putting up outside lights, making stage steps, putting up stage back drops, making shoe racks…. the list is endless and we are truly grateful for their sewa.

The Sachkand Room

A group of sewadars recently redecorated the ‘sachkand room’ in our darbar sahib (prayer hall). They made a very special bed for this room and put up beautiful curtains around it. They even bought beautiful new bedding. We are really grateful for their sewa as we now have a very peaceful room for Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

The importance of selfless sewa is highlighted by the Guru in this verse:

"ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਤ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਹਕਾਮੀ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਹੋਤ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ
